I am currently working on a book project, titled “Transferred Debt: Balancing Crime, Punishment, and Budgets through Legal Financial Obligations.” This project is based on a multi-method qualitative study of the sociopolitical history of fines and fees and their implementation in municipal courts. In addition to this project, I have contributed to other studies on the effects of police chokehold bans, the impact of cash assistance for people leaving prison, and the use of court-mandated alternatives to incarceration, such as treatment programs or community service.
My research has received support from the Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grant, New York State Archives Hackman Residency Program, CUNY’s B. Altman Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, and CUNY’s Knickerbocker Award for Archival Research.
